Navigating College, Majors and Internships: Meet Annie Holmes

College can be both the most fun and most stressful four years of your life. You find your lifelong friends and create memories that will last a lifetime, but you also need to figure out what you want to do with your life at a young age. This is exactly what college has been like for me, and as WSFS Bank’s Marketing Communications Intern this summer I’m excited to learn and grow my knowledge and skills in the communications and public relations field.

In 2019, I began attending Villanova University with no idea of what I wanted to study. Throughout my freshman and sophomore years, I tried out criminology and economics and although I enjoyed both, they did not feel right. With one week left in the summer leading into my junior year, I decided to register for communications classes for the fall semester.

The decision to add the communications classes, although completely on a whim, has continuously shown itself to be one of my best decisions. I immediately felt like I found the right program for me because all my professors are so personable, and I genuinely enjoy the work I do.

I just completed my junior year at Villanova, where I am studying communications with a specialization in public relations and advertising. Throughout my junior year, similarly to most college students, I applied to countless summer internships in both the general communications and marketing fields. I had so many interviews, but not many offers. Although it became discouraging, I never gave up on my search.

One day while scrolling on LinkedIn, I came across the application for the Summer Internship Program with WSFS. Being from the Greater Philadelphia region, I knew WSFS and its great reputation, so I decided to apply. I was quickly contacted by a Talent Acquisition Analyst to set up interviews for the Marketing Communications role. The timing and opportunity were just right!

When I heard about the role as a Marketing Communications Intern, I knew that it would be the perfect opportunity to incorporate both my overall major and specialization in one job. Then, through my interviews, it became clear that interning for WSFS would be a great opportunity for me to grow both personally and professionally.

After receiving my offer of employment, the onboarding process coincided with finals season at Villanova, so I was worried that I would miss something or do something wrong because of my busy, and stressful, schedule. The onboarding process was seamless and accommodating; it made me even more excited to get started at WSFS.

At WSFS, I am looking forward to helping the Communications team with different tasks like writing and proofreading articles, curating the weekly News Brief for Associates, interviewing my fellow interns and writing the Intern Spotlight Series, assisting with copywriting for both the WSFS and Bryn Mawr Trust social media channels, and much more!

My time so far at WSFS has reminded me of the feeling I had when I first started my communications classes, like I am in the right place, with the right people, doing what I love.
