Frequently Asked Questions
Type of Investments
Stocks
Stocks represent equity ownership in a corporation. Owners of common stocks are entitled to a portion of the profits and dividends of the corporation and can vote for the board of directors. Stocks are usually owned in hopes of price appreciation over time. In the event of bankruptcy, owners of stock may lose their entire investment.
Bonds
A bond is a fixed income instrument that is issued by a creditor, usually a government entity or corporation. It is basically a loan that is being held by the bondholder. The bondholder is paid a rate of interest for a pre-determined period after which the bondholder will be paid back the principal that was lent to the borrowing entity.
ETFs
Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are baskets of securities, providing the diversification benefits of mutual funds, but trade on major stock exchanges during trading hours. ETFs are offered in most asset classes, from stocks and bonds to currencies and commodities. ETFs generally have lower expense ratios and are more tax efficient than mutual funds
Options
An option gives the investor the right to buy or sell a security at a certain price on or before a specified date. The most common are call options and put options on stocks. An option is usually purchased or sold to hedge an existing position or to try to earn outsized gains on a small investment.
Mutual Funds
Mutual funds invest in stocks, bonds, or other securities, referred to as a portfolio. Typically, smaller investors pool their money together in a mutual fund so they can own a diversified basket of securities offering them diversification that they might not be able to get on their own.
