A Summer of Storytelling: Sadie Herr’s WSFS Communications Internship

This summer, Sadie Herr joined WSFS as a Corporate Communications Intern, bringing her connection to Philadelphia full circle. Growing up just ten blocks from the Bank Place office, she always saw WSFS as a fixture of the city. Returning home to intern with the company has given her a new perspective on an organization she once knew only from afar.

As a Communications Intern, Herr works primarily with Ashley Williamson on external communications, who she credits with showing her nothing but generosity and kindness throughout the summer. Daily, Herr works on writing stories that showcase the many facets of WSFS, from informational pieces and Associate spotlights to featuring WSFS’ community partners.

Her role has also included supporting public relations efforts, copyediting content, coordinating collaborations with 6ABC News, and assisting with paid media opportunities. The variety of projects has reinforced her interest in communications and demonstrated how effective storytelling can shape reputation, build trust, and connect a company with its audience.

“The most rewarding part of the summer has been the opportunity to apply my writing and journalism background to an entirely new industry,” she said. “Learning about financial services and adopting WSFS’ voice is much different than writing for a lifestyle magazine, for example. Both are valuable experiences, but the way I’ve been able to expand and adapt my portfolio has been incredible.”

Beyond written communications, Herr has also hosted video interviews for social media. She has had the opportunity to speak with Associates, community leaders, and special guests, including Warton Lecturer and Early Career Speaker, Ana Welsh.

“It was an incredibly engaging part of the summer for me,” she said.

Beyond the work itself, Herr said the people have made the greatest impression. “The Communications team is one of the most supportive, collaborative, and energetic teams I’ve ever been part of,” she said.

The team’s close-knit culture has shown her the kind of work environment she hopes to find throughout her career. “Now that I’ve experienced a team culture like this, I know how valuable it is and will look for it wherever I go,” she said.

A key part of that experience has been her manager, Connor Peoples. Through his mentorship, guidance, and willingness to invest in her growth, he has provided an example of the kind of leader she hopes to work with and someday become. His and the team’s support created an environment where she feels trusted to contribute, encouraged to learn, and motivated to grow professionally.

As the summer comes to an end, Herr leaves with a stronger skill set, a growing portfolio of published work, and a deeper understanding of the kind of career she wants to build.

Reflecting on her experience, Herr said, “I’m finishing this summer with a much clearer understanding of what I want for my future, and that’s really all I could have asked for.”
